Chapter Fifteen

Rayne led Jocelyn into the house, then let her walk past him into the entry. The house he had purchased looked far less run-down on the inside, in no way elegant, of course, but the furnishings had once been expensive and the paper on the walls complimented the Oriental carpet on the smooth hardwood floors.

The wood-frame structure was colonial in style, with a drawing room on one side, a dining room on the other, and a handsome staircase in between. A smaller withdrawing room faced the rear of the house, along with an intimate solar and a study where the former owner had conducted the business of running his plantation.

“Your quarters are upstairs,” Rayne said, breaking into her thoughts. “Second door on the right. If you need anything, ask the chambermaid. She’s usually somewhere at hand.”

Clutching the same small bundle of clothes she had brought with her from the inn, Jocelyn looked up at him. “You want me to stay in the house?”

“I want you close enough so I can keep an eye on you. As far as working the rest of the day, I believe tomorrow will be soon enough for you to begin your labors. In the meantime, I’ll have cook send up something for you to eat.”

When he said nothing more, Jocelyn crossed the foyer, lifted her skirt up out of the way, and climbed the stairs.

Rayne watched her go, her lithe form moving gracefully. He caught the sway of her hips, a glimpse of slender ankle, heard the rustle of her skirts against her legs. When she turned at the top of the stairs, her small pointed breasts moved gently beneath her blouse, and his blood began to thicken in his veins. He thought of her sweet soft lips, and his stomach clenched, an ache pooling low in his groin.

Bloody hell! The woman had the most incredible effect on him. He couldn’t look at her without wanting to hoist her skirts, couldn’t hear the sound of her voice without wanting to plunge his tongue inside her mouth. He hadn’t meant for her to sleep in the house. God’s breath, he hadn’t meant to bring her back with him at all!

Or had he?

Wasn’t that, in truth, the very reason he had come to this bloody island in the first place?

Everyone had tried to dissuade him. Particularly Dominic and Catherine, and especially his sister.

“For heaven sakes, Rayne,” Alexandra had pleaded, “you’re putting your life at risk for that woman. Can’t you see that?”

“Alex may be right,” Dominic agreed. “You underestimated the woman before. You can’t be certain what she’s capable of.”

“I’m hardly afraid of her. She caught me unawares is all.”

“That isn’t the point!” Dominic had argued, but Rayne had been determined.

He had to confront her, had to lay his doubts to rest. He needed to see her face, he told himself. One look in those clear blue eyes and he would see the loathing she had hidden from him so well. One probing glance would unmask her treachery, then his mind could accept the truth of what had happened and leave him in peace.
